The Big Picture Fest brings more colour to Newcastle's streets

The Big Picture Fest (BPF) recently returned to Newcastle with a festival of colour, creativity and community - adding more spectacular large-scale murals to the city's growing street art trail. 

Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation (HCCDC) was thrilled to partner with NSW Government's The Festival of Place in sponsoring the event for it's second year in the city - as it attracted over 12,000 residents and visitors from across the state, showcasing Newcastle as one of the best street art destinations in NSW. 

Building on the original BPF artworks created in 2020, this year's festival has introduced another 9 permanent outdoor exhibition spaces to Newcastle - expanding the city's legacy art trail that can be explored and enjoyed by locals and visitors for years to come.

Showcasing high quality public artwork created by interstate, local and emerging artists, the 3-day festival promotes collaboration with the local residents, businesses and the broader arts community.

Over the October long weekend, BPF partnered with the New Annual festival's Chalk The Walk and Little Festival activations to create an interactive public art trail through the city where the community could watch and engage with the live art-making in progress. The weekend also included a 'Spray Alley' graffiti jam paying tribute the festival's graffiti culture origins; the Crosspoint Mentor Program fostering local emerging artists; and held exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and behind-the-scenes walking tours.
